If you’re going on a trip this summer, you’re giving yourself an excellent opportunity to experience something new or just take a load off. However, you also put yourself at risk for dental emergencies—serious oral health problems that require immediate professional attention.

If you want to prevent dental emergencies from cropping up, there are a few things you can do to protect yourself. Here are some examples.

See Your Dentist Before Your Leave

Toothaches seem like they come out of nowhere, but they’re typically a symptom of a serious, long-standing oral infection. If you have that kind of oral health problem, your dentist would be able to pick up on that at a regular exam.

It’s important to see your dentist at least twice a year for regular checkups and cleanings, so if you haven’t had one in a while, getting one before you leave for vacation is a great idea.

Watch What You Eat

When you’re on vacation, it can be easy to loosen your belt and enjoy whatever food you come across. While that’s not necessarily a bad thing, there are some foods that you may not want to go near even in the context of a vacation.

Take hard candy, for example. Not only is it chock full of sugar, but it can also deal serious damage to your teeth if you bite down on them. Even if you’re enjoying your vacation, foods that can break a tooth are always a bad idea. You should also be sure to brush your teeth after meals, especially after indulgent ones.

Be Careful Around the Pool

You’d be surprised how many people wind up at the emergency dentist’s office as a result of an accident at a swimming pool. For one, lots of people ignore the pool rules and do things that are dangerous, like running or diving into the shallow end.

Even if you’re careful, there are plenty of people who aren’t. Young kids are infamous for suddenly emerging from the water and running into people, which can easily knock out a tooth if you aren’t careful. If you want to avoid dental emergencies, you should be sure to be conscientious about your surroundings and follow all pool rules as much as possible.
