A Closer Look at the Steps of the Veneers Process

According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the demand for cosmetic dental work in the US has doubled within the last five years. And among all of the available treatment options, few are as capable and incredible as veneers! But if you’re interested in upgrading your smile with their help, you might have concerns about what the process for receiving them looks like. Here’s a breakdown of the steps that compose the method for enhancing your smile with veneers.

Step #1. The Consultation

As with other types of dental work, a consultation is the logical first step in the process of getting veneers. You’ll be able to discuss your desired outcome with your dentist, and they’ll also be allowed to inspect your oral health and ensure you’re eligible for receiving veneers. For example, the affected teeth must have enough healthy enamel to support the veneers. Patients should also have healthy gums and a generally healthy smile beforehand.

It’s also worth noting that some issues are beyond the capabilities of veneers. Even though chipped, cracked, or stained teeth can usually be corrected by veneers, more serious or extensive issues might require a treatment that’s more restorative in nature, such as a dental crown.

Step #2. The Trial Run

There are a few different ways that your dentist can preview how you’ll look with veneers. They can create a life-sized model of your teeth and shape wax veneers onto them to see how it looks. They can also fit your teeth with trial veneers that are made from acrylic plastic or tooth-colored filling material. While you can’t leave the office like this, you can take pictures for further review and contemplation.

Step #3. Teeth Preparation

Once your dentist has cleared you for veneers and approved your treatment plan, your teeth will be prepared for treatment. For the veneers to lay flush against your teeth, a small portion of enamel will need to be shaved off of the teeth being treated (usually about 5mm or less). It’s worth noting that this process is irreversible, and teeth treated in this manner will always need to wear veneers. That said, you won’t have to worry about any discomfort or undesirable long-term effects.

Step #4. Veneer Creation

Once your teeth have been prepped, your veneers will need to be fabricated. Your dentist will send impressions of your teeth to the lab, where dental technicians use them to create a replica of your teeth. During this time, you’ll be given temporary veneers to wear so that your daily routine isn’t impacted, and also so your dentist can make continuous and precise adjustments.

Step #5. Wrapping Up

When your permanent veneers are finished, they’re sent back to your dentist for the final step—placement! The insides of your veneers are etched with a special solution that facilitates a stronger bond against your teeth. A special type of bonding cement is also used, and afterward, the veneer and tooth essentially become one unit. Once they’re bonded, you’ll immediately notice how much better your smile looks!
