When preparing for dental implant surgery in Bonita Springs, you likely have many concerns. How soon will you be able to brush your teeth? How long will it take to receive your new smile? How much pain can you expect? As the day of your procedure approaches, a local dentist shares the answers to some of the questions you may have.

1.      Is It Normal to Bleed After the Procedure?

Yes, some minor bleeding is completely normal in the 2-3 days following your procedure. Before you leave, your dentist will place gauze over your surgical sites to help reduce the amount of blood; however, it is important that you remember to apply appropriate pressure to the areas. You will need to do this for at least one hour following your surgery. Because you do not want to cause additional bleeding, it is strongly advised that you avoid spitting or rinsing for the first 24 hours.

2.      Should I Expect to Be In Much Pain While I Recover?

It is not uncommon to experience some discomfort once your anesthesia wears off. Your gums will likely be sore, but you are advised to take any prescriptions or over-the-counter pain relievers as instructed. Remember not to wait until the pain is too severe. Try to take something before the effects of your anesthesia fully wear off, as this will help to minimize the amount of discomfort you might feel.

3.      When Can I Brush My Teeth?

It is best to wait a full 24 hours before brushing your teeth after dental implant surgery. Rinsing with mild saltwater can help to quicken the healing process, just be mindful not to spit. Once you begin to clean your teeth with a toothbrush, be careful around your implants, as you don’t want to cause additional bleeding or damage.

4.      When Can I Start Enjoying My New Smile?

It’s no secret that the dental implant placement process is a lengthy one. Patience is necessary, especially since your implants must fuse properly with the bone and surrounding tissues. This does not happen overnight, and you will be required to “recover” for at least 3-6 months. Once your dentist in Bonita Springs believes you are fully healed, you will then receive your custom-made dental restoration (i.e., crown, bridge, denture). Once it is put into place, you will be free to embrace all that life has to offer with your new smile.

Being nervous before getting dental implant surgery is normal. But, removing some of the uncertainty can make a big difference in how you approach your recovery at home.
