Dentist in Bonita Springs Says Stop Sipping Sparkling Water!

young woman drinking water Many know that soda just isn’t the best substance to put into your body—especially when compared to water. Some just love that bubbly feeling associated with soda, which is why so many people love sparkling water. Although you may have thought you found a happy medium with sparkling water, this drink could actually be damaging your teeth? Your dentist in Bonita Springs wants to explain what’s really happening in your mouth when you choose to cut sugar but keep the carbonation in your beverages with sparkling water.

Wait, I thought sparkling water was good for you?

With no sugar or any other ingredients, how could this beverage be bad? The reality is that the bubbly affect created from carbon dioxide has a chemical reaction in your mouth each time you drink it. This is what happens:

  • The chemical reaction in your mouth turns the carbon dioxide into carbonic acid (this gives the drink that fun, refreshing bite in your mouth comparable to soda).
  • The acid formed can wear away tooth enamel.
  • Your teeth can become more exposed to dental bacteria and other problems.

Do you sip your fizzy water throughout the day? Hopefully, you don’t add a lime or lemon to it—that’s even more acid! What are some of your better alternatives?

What’s the best drink for my health from a dental health standpoint?

Although sparkling water is healthier for you than soda or juice by a long shot, this fizzy drink is still more harmful to your mouth than water. So simply, water is the best substance that you can have at any given time—whether it’s for your overall health or your oral health.

The proof is shown easily on a pH scale. Need help reading the scale? Simply put, the lower the number, the more acidic (worse) it is for you. Pure water has a pH level of 7 compared to sparkling water with a  pH level of 5-7. In comparison to sodas with a pH level of a low 2, you’re making smarter decisions with sparkling water and regular water. But, it’s always best to just stick with the natural thing: good ol’ water!

What’s the bottom line?

Basically, it’s always best to stick with natural substances when it comes to taking care of your body. That even applies to the foods and drinks you decide to enjoy. Although you may be trying to be more health conscious, be aware of what your foods and drinks are doing to your whole body—including your mouth.

If the choice is between a soft drink and sparkling water, it’s safe to choose sparkling water. Just be sure to rinse your mouth with water afterward and limit your intake throughout the day. Above else, drink lots of pure water!
