Single Tooth Replacement – Bonita Springs, FL
Recomplete Your Smile and Prevent Future Dental Problems
Many individuals who have a single missing tooth choose not to fill in the gap. They may think that because they can still chew without too much discomfort, there is no reason to spend time and money on getting a dental prosthetic. They may not even be concerned about the aesthetic consequences that come with an incomplete arch of teeth. But replacing even a single missing tooth is important! If you choose not to replace a missing member of your smile, the adjacent teeth may drift into the empty space, leading to misalignment and TMJ problems. Bone deterioration, gum tissue loss, and even further tooth loss may also occur.
At Pelican Landing Dental, our team is proud to offer reliable and natural-looking single tooth replacement in Bonita Springs.
Single Tooth Replacement Options
There are basically two ways to replace a single missing tooth: either with a fixed bridge or a dental implant.
A fixed bridge, sometimes called crown and bridgework, has two crowns that fit over the teeth that are next to the gap (the abutment teeth). The crowns support an artificial tooth between them. This tooth replacement option can be quite natural-looking and sturdy, and it is relatively affordable. It has the ability to restore full dental function and prevent the teeth around it from drifting out of place.
A single tooth implant does not rely on the remaining natural teeth for support. Rather, it is a small titanium cylinder that our team surgically places beneath the gum line. It bonds with the tissue around it, enabling it to act as a substitute for the root of the missing tooth. After the implant has had adequate time to fuse with the bone that surrounds it (which may take several months), we place a custom-made crown on top of it to replace the visible portion of the missing tooth.
The Benefits of Implant Supported Single Tooth Replacement
Either a fixed bridge or an implant can provide secure tooth replacement. However, we often recommend dental implants in Bonita Springs due to the many advantages they offer:
- Placing a fixed bridge requires that we significantly modify the abutment teeth. An implant does not require this step and thus enables us to preserve as much healthy dentition as possible.
- Because an implant bonds with the tissue around it, it can aid in preserving jawbone’s structure. A fixed bridge does nothing to stop the loss in bone volume that occurs after tooth loss.
- Dental implants provide comprehensive tooth replacement, which means they provide a more natural feel and function than a fixed bridge.
- An implant may last for 30 years or longer. A fixed bridge may last for just 10 years or so before it needs to be replaced.
