What Can I Expect from Full Mouth Replacement?
The full mouth replacement process varies from patient to patient. However, here is a general overview of the steps you may go through:
- Your initial consultation
- Preparatory treatment, such as bone grafts, extractions, or gum disease treatment
- The implant placement surgery
- A waiting period while the implants bond with the tissue around them
- Design and placement of your permanent restoration
From beginning to end, the entire process may take several months to a year or longer. However, it is worth the wait! You can expect your restoration to be comfortable, aesthetically pleasing, and highly functional.
An implant-retained denture is a prosthetic that replaces an entire arch of teeth. The number of implants used to support it varies depending on a patient’s bone structure. After the implants are in place, you will wait several months while they fuse with the bone around them. Then, our team will attach small pieces to the tops of the implants, which will connect the implants to your denture. An implant-retained denture may be permanently fixed in place, or it may simply “snap” onto and off of the implants. In some cases, it is possible to retrofit a patient’s existing denture to work with dental implants.
All-on-4 Dental Implants
As the name of this procedure implies, it can replace an entire arch of teeth with just four dental implants, which are placed in the jaw at locations where the bone is naturally thick and strong. You will receive a temporary denture on the same day as the implant placement surgery; that’s why the All-on-4 process is sometimes called the Teeth in a Day treatment. You’ll get your permanent restoration after your body has had a chance to bond with the dental implants.
Am I a Candidate for Full Mouth Replacement?
In general, candidates for full mouth replacement:
- Have lost all or most of their teeth
- Have adequate bone density to support dental implants
- Are free of major health concerns that could compromise their ability to heal after implant placement surgery
- Are frustrated by their traditional dentures
Even if you do not believe you are an “ideal candidate” for full mouth replacement, we still welcome you to visit us for a consultation. Most patients who have suffered extensive tooth loss are able to receive dental implants, either right away or after a few treatments to prepare their mouth to support their new smile.
